[comp.sys.apple] Two Unrelated Troubles

dh2y+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Drew David Holzlein) (04/30/88)

First, I'm having minor trouble using emacs on our network, using kermit in
vt52 or vt100 mode. The problem is that when I back up(non-dest) or backspace
(dest) the screen is sometimes not updated, my host gets the key and the file
is altered but more often than not it does not(sometimes it displays similar
updated text but the screen still doesn't match the file.) I know it's not
emacs or the host since I have used both on other machines (MacKermit,
MS-Kermit, on console). I believe it's not my 80 col. card since I have tried
two different ones, and I get the same prob. Yes, it only happens backing up.
Setup: Late model Apple ][+, AE Viewmaster 80 in slot 3, 16K in slot 0,
Buffered Grappler+ w/Apple DMP in slot 1, SSC compat. with Gandalf DOV 640
modem running at 9600b in slot 2, Mockingboard in slot 4, floppies in slot 6.
Any remedies or ideas greatly appreciated.

Second, since I added the Viewmaster 80 my Apple takes between 15s and 5min
before the power light comes on, then it wants to be turned off then on before
it will begin the boot. Sounds to me like a power suppy prob, but since I'm
posting anyway, I'd like a 2nd, 3rd, nth opinion before I run out and spend
the little money I have.

One last thing before I go, Are there any term emulators out there that are
1) inexpensive 2)something reasonable(vtxxx, h19, etc) 3)incredibly fast.
My serial card and the modem, and my host can do 19.2Kb which although not
necessary would be fun to do. As it is 9600 is pushing it on the screen
updates.

Sorry for the long post, and much thanks for any replies,
Drew D. Holzlein

Which version of Kermit are you using? Versions earlier than 3.82 had at
least some of the problems you describe.

Alas, the World is full of trade offs. One way to write a communications
program that supports the whole range of 80 column cards available for
Apples is to rely on the onboard firmware (the alternative is to either
write a driver for every conceivable 80 column card as Softronics <SOFTERM>
has done, or to take the position that if the 80 column card isn't
compatible with Apple's 80 column card at the CTRC level that's too bad
<TIC, Z-Link>).

The tradeoff from using the onboard firmware is that most cards (the
exceptions would be ones that support hardware scrolling) can't keep up
at baud rates beyond 4800. 4800 is fast enough for most hosts that only
rewrite parts of the screen that have changed and provide "type ahead"
buffers; the real advantage of 9600 or 19,200 applies when a substantial
amount of the processing involves file transfer (my own preference is
to edit locally and transfer, rather than edit on the mainframe, although
I do use the mainframe editor for most of my replies to mail).

Cheap or fast (pick one). SOFTERM 2 will do everything you want to do
at 9600 (it bypasses the 80 column card firmware). I've seen the program
from mail order sources for around $130. SOFTERM's limit is 9600, I
believe Kermit will let you set up for file transfer at 19,200, but I
doubt there's any chance of being able to run a satisfactory emulation
of any kind at that speed.

You can't beat Kermit's price (public domain) but there was a statement
in another post to the effect that you have to have an 80 column card that
supports reverse scrolling. Since I'm using a //c and an IBM host, I'm
not in a position to fully diagnose your problem. If you already have
Kermit 3.82, then THE authority on whether the problem is your specific
80 column card is Ted Medin <medin-t@shark.nosc.mil>
