[comp.sys.apple] No Sale

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (Murph Sewall) (04/28/88)

>A new company called AEU is selling all electronical supplies/equipment

Sorry Jesse; with all the new people that sign onto newslists this message
has to be repeated from time to time, but YOU CANNOT SELL MERCHANDISE
on networks paid for by taxpayers (NOT for profit). Comp.sys.apple
is distributed on arpa/mil (Department of Defense -- not nice people to
have annoyed with you) and bitnet (colleges, universities, and other not
for profit research organizations).

The network management has been tolerant, even understanding about folks
learning the rules, and I doubt there's much concern about the occasional
private individual selling off bits and pieces of old equipment a la
garage sale, but they'll draw the line at outright merchandising, and the
newsgroup could disappear. It also isn't legal for most of us to even
reply by email to your offer (I gather many if not most USENET sites are
not thus restricted; if commercialism persists in the newsgroups though,
what would happen is USENET would be cut off from the rest of us).

If posters would restrict these types of articles to misc.forsale or
comp.newprod you would probably be permitted to mention here "read
my posting titled XYZ". I believ that the two groups mentioned above
are not sent over into the 'promised land' of bit/arpa. Also note
that in news.groups there was some recent discussion on a commercial
series of groups - there might be some promise there.
