I saw "Beat Street" this past weekend at the Sack Pi Alley in Downton Boston. It's about the hip-hop, subway painting, cut and scratch, rapping, break-dancing scene in the Bronx (which seems to have changed a bit since I grew up there). I enjoyed Beat Street. You don't go to see the plot, you go to see the break dancing and the impressions of the city. Both of these are well represented. The story centers around a few young guys and their quests to be grandmaster break dancers, DJ's, subway painters, and the like. This movie was a good compromise, the characters were unaffected by Hollywood hype, but the cinematography was tolerable, though not as slick and stunning as in a movie like "The Warriors." It was non-violent, the only gang confrontations involved impromptu dance rumbles, reminicent of, though unlike, the Sharks and Jets dance scene in "West Side Story." Love doesn't get in the way here either. There are love affairs, but the lead characters have their hearts in their life's work, and they don't get led around by sappy emotions. I've been listening to a lot of rap music lately, but haven't seen any mention of it on the net. Anybody out there listening to the cut and scratch? I've had Run/DMC in my cassette deck all week.
