[comp.sys.apple] Config/Deconfiguring GS RAM Disk

TMPLee@DOCKMASTER.ARPA (06/10/88)

Does anyone know if there is a way to configure and deconfigure the GS
RAM5 disk from a running program? There are some applications (notably
Paintworks Gold) that won't run when the RAM disk has been configured in
by allocating it memory. (the manual says it won't run period, not a
question of having left enough memory for the application it would
seem.) Instead of having to go into the control panel, turn the machine
off, and re-boot just to deinstall the RAMdisk (and the converse when
done) it would be much nicer if I could start up a short program to do
it.

(Its possible thas has come up before, but I didn't notice it; I don't
have a Toolbox manual(s) and any code would have to be written from the
mini-assembler or basic.)

Here is a risky method but it does work to change RAMdisk size while the machine
is on. Go to the Control-Panel and change your RAMDISK size (this process will
kill all your ramdisk data but since you are taking it out I guess you won't
mind). then hit option-OA-Ctrl-Reset (the system test) and then IMMEDIATELY
type ctrl-OA-Reset (Warm Boot).. Your RAMDISK is now changed... You cannot wait
too long though because if the SELFTEST gets past 20000, it will be messing
with battery ram and you could mess up your clock and battery RAM. I am not
sure how many other bad things it does to the system so I am not one to use it
Does anyone else have any comments on how dangerous this is?. Another idea
is to exit from Diversi-Copy, I know that it kills all of the data in your
ram disk but I am not sure if it will reset the size of it or not...

I've been able to use Paintworks Gold when there's a RAM dik configured.
I have 1.7 Megs and have 300K set aside for a RAM disk. Haven't had any
problems yet, though I haven't used Paintworks Gold extensively yet.

There's a better way of doing this, you simultae a cold boot without turning
off the computer. You still have to go intop the control panel and reboot.
I found this in the docs for Diversi Cache. Press OA-Shift-Cntrl-Reset, wait
for two beeps, then hit Cntrl-Reset, I think I got that right.

though. I found this i

I once saw a utility for the IIgs that, when put in the system folder, would
make control panel changes active instantly. Seeing that I never used it, I
can't tell you if it works or not, but I can look for it and leave it in
mail. I beleive it was called CTRLNOW..
