[comp.sys.apple] TOPS for Apple//

jm7e+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Jeremy G. Mereness") (06/18/88)

As we all know, Appleshare requires a dedicated Macintosh in order to function.
This is crummy not only because it leave Apple //'s completely out of the
picture as a server but also completely ties down a potentially useful Mac.

The solution in the Mac world has been TOPS, which allows Macs to act as
servers in the background, while being used for other things in the foreground.
Anyone else on Appletalk or the more economical PhoneNet with a TOPS driver can
Telnet onto any other Mac's hard disk that is acting as a server. Except for
TOPS drivers being serialized (no two TOPS users with the same copy of the
driver can log on simultaneously), this is the ideal file-sharing network
system for Apple computers.

Question: is there some form of TOPS for the Apple //gs? Could one be produced?
Could, then, a // be used as a server or even a print spooler (a use for that
mothballed ][+?????) ?

Finally, Mac IP is the best net software I have ever seen (three connections
online at once, FTP and Telnet protocols, operated over PhoneNet or
Appletalk...) Is there something similar for the gs?
