The Karate Kid is a movie about a boy and his mother who moved to the San Fernando Valley (CA) from Newark, NJ. The boy, Daniel, befriends the daughter of a _very wealthy_ couple, named Alli, whose ex-boyfriend is a martial arts buff. The ex-boyfriend obviously still likes the girl, and he and his pals take out the frustration on Daniel in a series of fairly brutal beatings. Daniel, in the mean time, becomes pals with the apartment maintenance man, Mr. Miyagi, who learned Karate from his father as he grew up in Okinawa. What happens next? See the movie. All I can say is that I really loved this film. The acting is good overall, and the part of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita?) may even be "Best Supporting Actor" material when Oscars roll around. The movie has plenty of excitement, and is really never dull. Better still, the excitement doesn't beat you over the head like Indiana Jones. Some are comparing the movie to Rocky; personally I think it was much better (although I haven't seen Rocky in a long time - but I am from Philadelphia). I saw the movie with a TRW discount ticket for $2.50, but would have paid $5. Lee Hasiuk
