[comp.sys.apple] core wars wanted ! / Re: multitasking ont the apples...

blume@netmbx.UUCP (Heiko Blume) (06/23/88)

i inadvertently posted this to the binaries group lately so here we go again..
i recently read about a game called core wars in scientific american, and i
definitely want to have it. there even exists a version for the apple //
series, written by Robert Periano of George Mason Uni, Farifax, VA but no
exact information how to reach him was given...
if anyone has that game or knows where to get it please mail me !

subject of the game is to write little prgms in some assembly language
that have to kill (i.e. delete etc) their opponent prgms running in a small
{simulated} multi-tasking computer.

while talking about multitasking:
many recent postings where speculating if multitasking was possible on the
apple. of course it is, and such thing exists since '85. i still try to get it,
its called smalltalk-pc. it works by implementing a virtual machine which is
interpreting the processes (better: objects). no problems with segmenatation
and the problems mentioned here can occur. it supports nearly everything
(mouse, ram-cards, networking, multi-processors...)
of course u cant run dos/prodos software under it but who cares.
its described in detail in BYTE 5/85. i'd love it...
