First of all, the most recurring gripe is that the Klingons could not have had a cloaking device, it was Romulan. Could someone tell me why the heck the Klingons couldn't have developed their OWN cloaking device???? End of all the Klingon-Romulan trade arguments. Why cant the Klingons have their own "Bird of Prey?" Just because GM makes cars doesnt mean that Ford cant, so just because the Romulans have a Bird of Prey doesn't mean that the Klingons cant, too. The "lack of emotion" about Enterprise destruction. What more could you want? The emotion etched on the faces of the command crew told more than you could ever say. Or would you prefer Kirk and crew to blubber and bawl for about ten minutes? These are adult men with a serious mission, and in this instance Spock came before any loyalty to what is really nothing more than a machine. With Klingons and an unstable planet, Kirk has no time to get all wishy washy blathering about the Enterprise. The decision to dump Kirstie Alley as Saavik was not arbitrary. She demanded 10 times what she made in ST2, and Nimoy commented in People that "they jsut couldn't afford her." Dont blame Paramount for that, they worked out of a chinese puzzle box the best way they could. Spock's absence was presence. If you can watch the film without having to be hand-held all the way through, you understand that the whole MOVIE is ABOUT Spock, for goodness sake!! The absence of his camaraderie with the crew is VITAL, because it makes the viewer understand just how important he his to Star Trek!!! I know, I know, all this belongs in net.startrek. But I've seen so many silly things said about it that no one responded to that I figured someone should at least post some kind of reply. ST3 was the best, dramatic, adventuresome Star Trek ever. Its pacing was DIFFERENT from ST2, different director, most notably, and if you just want to see carbon copies of Wrath of Khan ( **** NOT K A H N ****) , you'll be disappointed, because Trek 3 has more dramatic elements that just space battles; Kirk must decide between saving his friend, and bucking Starfleet. His friends must make the same decision. He must face the death of his son, the death of the Genesis planet with it, and the death of his ship. Lastly, (I promise) Trek 1 is a good, very good film. But it is not on an emotional par with Treks 2 or 3. As for all that above, I think enough is said. David Whitney !ctvax!uokvax!uok!dwhitney
