I first heard Vaporware in 1983 from an Atari executive who was complaining about the difficulty of selling in a market breathless awaiting the much rumored "Peanut" (which turned out to be the PCjr). Everyone KNEW the machine WOULD be delivered - what no one knew at the time was WHEN (actually everyone knew approximately when) and what capabilities it would have (turned out to have such a big build-up that it was a major disappointment when it did arrive).
