Only partly true.  So far, we haven't been able to figure out how to get
APPLE2-L to return files to UUCP mailers.  HOWEVER, you CAN send files to
APPLE2-L.  You can even be added to APPLE2-L's distribution list; what
you can't do is retrieve things from APPLE2-L's archives.

There are a number of legit Apple program developers with subscriptions
to APPLE2-L (Dave Lyons author of DAVEX, for example).  Files sent to
comp.binaries.apple2 seem to eventually find their way to APPLE2-L, but
the process is NOT automatic and, therefore, is subject to failure.

I'd guess the most direct route from you to APPLE2-L would be:
!ucbvax!brownvm.bitnet!apple2-l, although decwrl can find brownvm.bitnet,
and the "official" address probably is: ...psuvax1!brownvm.bitnet!apple2-l
