suggestion:
it might be worthwile to get the hardware manuals out and look for that
R/W line in the cable pinout. then take a switch and two LEDs to
construct a little read/write-indicator / write-protect thing.
especially recommended for hard disks !
i'll ask my hardware wizard to work this out, so keep an eye on this
newsgroup.

InCider published plans in '84/'85, in the early days they actually had 
HARDWARE construction articles.  They used a tri-color LED to indicate
the various states, so no extra drilling in the case was required, although
the hardware to drive the LED may have been a bit more involved than with
the more 'modern' two-element LED's. (3 wires, 1 Red, 1 Green element)
