[comp.sys.apple] WORD PROCESSORS

DICKSON@HARTFORD.BITNET (04/30/87)

To anyone who knows anything about word processors,

I am currently using Magic Window II, written for a 64k Apple II. It's a good
WP, but since my system is now an Apple IIgs with 1.25 meg, 2 5.25 floppies,
and 1 3.5 floppy, I think I should be able to do better. What I'm specifically
looking for:

        1) A WP that will use all of my memory, so I can write more than 10
        pages.

        2) One that works on the 'what you see is what you get' principle--
i.e., if I'm using 100 columns, either the computer shows 100 columns
using graphics, or it scrolls left and right (like magic window). NOT
one that will print 80 columns on one line, then 20 on the next, then
        repeat. And so on.

        3) A spelling checker.

If anything like the above has been written specifically for the gs, so much the
better. I'd also like any information anyone has on Mousewrite, Sensible
Writer, and Word Perfect. Thanks in advance,

                                Bill Dickson

Folks,

My turn to ask for your recommendations.

Of the following, what is your favorite word processor for the
Apple IIe and why?

		Word Perfect

		Microsoft Word

		The word processor in Appleworks

	Thanks,

_Brint

Can't comment on WordPerfect or Word. Only experience is with
AppleWorks and Volition System's (alas, no longer with us :-( ) ASE Apple
Pascal Editor on ][e and ][c, and RUNOFF on DEC. Of these, AppleWorks clearly
wins. Enhanced with full complement of Beagle Bros. Timeout accessories. It's
good on the ][c (386K Apple memory), great on the ][e (3 Mb Applied Engineering
RanWorks), Transwarp, mouse.

Haven't started using WorkPerfect on IBMs and PC transporter yet. V5.0 gets
very good reviews. If it turns out to be great, might induce trying Apple
version. However, for now, AppleWorks-Timeout meets all my needs (except
that a communication program would be nice).

****DISCLAMER: My comments, etc., are my own shakey opinions ********

What about Apple Writer //e, eh?

And, for those of you who have heard of it, Word Juggler //e by Quark.
This was my favorite, except that it had a copy-protection scheme. Grrr.

On two subjects,
APPLEWRITER: I have seen at least two postings mentioning that Applewriter
can no longer be purchased. Our local dealer has version 2.1 for $149.00.
Has the program been dropped since he got the packages or is this reverse
vaporware?
FREEWRITER: The hodgepodge of FreDwriter postings to APPLE-L were my first
successful (sort of) posting to the list. Please feel free to kill them.
If anyone wants I can upload a newer version in a much more efficient manner
after the space is freed up.
