[comp.sys.apple] Why do I get duplicate postings?

A1T@ECL.PSU.EDU (Andy Tefft) (08/28/88)

I don't know how common this is, but I'm sending to the list in the hopes
that someone else has seen this phenomenon:

approximately 20% of everything i receive from this list is an exact duplicate
of something else i've received. I'm subscribed through listserv@ndsuvm1,
and everything says it came from there. Sometimes I get the things
on the same day but more often a half day apart or more. It's really odd...
does everyone get two of somethings, do certain people always post twice,
or what?? could it be from people posting to comp.sys.apple as well as
sending to info-apple@brl.mil??

There are occassional timing problems between the INTERNET/BITNET gateways
(observed at both CUNYVM and MITVMA at least) that cause duplication
of mail (occurs in BOTH directions through the gateways). The problem
is more or less random (more likely to affect longer messages).

The gatemasters are aware of the problem, but getting it fixed is
nontrivial. The gateway software used on BITNET has a number of
shortcomings. Perhaps the next version (vaporware) will have a fix
for the problem. Rumor also has it that major hardware upgrades are
budgeted for MILNET. Whether installation of new equipment on the
other side affects the problem remains to be seen.

For the time being, the occasional duplicates remain an unavoidable
"feature" of subscribing to Internet based lists on BITNET.

I experience the same problem. In fact, I received two copies of
your message about 1 minute apart (usually it is more like your half
day apart). Except for the timestamps from the LISTSERVs, the only
difference between the two copies of your message was that the
"From:" lines differed as follows:

     From: Andy Tefft <A1T%ecl.psu.edu@BRL.MIL>
     From: Andy Tefft <A1T@ECL.PSU.EDU>
