[comp.sys.apple] BLU 2.28 problems

HEACOCK@KUHUB.CC.UKANS.EDU (Doug Heacock) (08/30/88)

I downloaded BLU 2.28 from LISTSERV@BROWNVM, EXEC'ed it, and here's what
happened: after the program was saved, I got this on the screen:

	AC78- 85
	*
	C010- 0D
	*
	824A- FF
	*
	]

I pressed <RETURN> at the Applesoft prompt, just to reassure myself that
all was, indeed, well, and then I got bumped back into the monitor:

	9500- 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
	*

I went back to Applesoft, rebooted (I'm using ProDOS 8 v 1.4), and did a
CATALOG, which showed BLU as follows:

	BLU BIN 45 <NO DATE> <NO DATE> 22139 A=$1000

So I entered -BLU, it loaded, and returned me to the Applesoft prompt, with
no other visible effects. I got into the monitor, listed from $1000:

	1000 JMP $204A
	1003 INC $41EE
	1006	BRK
	1007 BRK
	etc..

The BRK's continued until $1048, where something that looked like code began.
All of this led me to believe that the program should have loaded at $2000; I
seemed to remember reading something about system programs loading there. So
I decided it was worth a shot, and BLOADed BLU at $2000. From the monitor, I
gave the 2000G command, and got a beep; a box on the screen, made from inverse
L's and Z's and other characters, and a message inside the box that said,
"MLI ERROR $56 ($20C7- $C7), Bad Buffer address, press any key; then I got an
Applesoft error (?OVERFLOW ERROR) and an Applsoft prompt. I pressed RETURN,
and got a beep and a register dump:

	00C5- A=00 X=FF Y=01 P=B4 S=F2
	*

I know this is a rather windy explanation--sorry--but I'm getting nowhere with
this. Can someone help? (I'm guessing it will be obvious to many of you...)

Oh, yes...my Apple is a 128K //e (unenhanced). Thanks in advance for your
suggestions.

Two ideas come to mind. The first is that I seem to recall that you
must have BASIC.SYSTEM installed before EXECing a file created by the
EXECUTIONER.

I requested the BLU 2.28 file (88-00532) from the LISTSERVer at
BROWNVM and noticed that there are 3 lines of garbage at the end of
the file. These lines *MUST* be removed. Delete everything after
the line that says "E00G". At least the file is in the 4-bit packing
mode so you shouldn't be having problems caused by ASCII/EBCDIC
translations.
