The explosions are divided between superimpositions and comnputer generated images. Digital Productions had a severe problem with explosions. The state of the art in blowing things up on computers lags behind the rest of Digital Scene Simulation. And you can blame Van der Veer for the terrible mattes in TLSF. All the scenes of the Gun Star landing in the (really) "starlite, starbrite" trailer park are tacky mattes from Van Der Veer. Natch, most of this is because they were done in 35mm (rather than 65mm like GHOSTBUSTERS), but Van der Veer really ought to align their printers. And a sorry note for you holding your breath for Dune: better breathe now. It's supposed to come out in December (ha!), but Van der Veer is once again doing the process work. DDLco has set their clearly impossible schedule of 300+ shots before release. That's over 4 a day, campers. This means that either Dune will be late (again), or DDLco will have to find several more companies who are NOT working on 2010. There are only a finite number of effects cos., most working at full blast already. Maybe DDL can threaten to break legs again? Lord knows that the effects are really in doubt after Gonad the Cruiser (er, Conan the Destroyer). Grace Jones afraid of a mouse? Unlikely. She isn't afraid of (?) fans who handcuff themselves to her. {And what does that say about her music? >-) } Alex
