[comp.sys.apple] 4modem

4K Xmodem is currently implemented in MouseTalk and DataTerm (Applied
Engineering's version of Talk is Cheap). It's also implemented in Version
3.00 of Talk is Cheap which isn't quite ready for release yet as it adds lots
of other new features to the script language.

I think it's a bit early to say that 4K Xmodem hasn't taken off like expected.
It takes time to update software to support any new protocol though updating
an existing Xmodem or Ymodem driver to support 4K xmodem is fairly trivial.
It's not a windowed protocol like Zmodem but it's a heck of a lot easier to
implement and the throughput rate difference between something like 4K xmodem
and Zmodem is probably not worth the tremendous amount of effort a Zmodem
driver would require since Zmodem would require that the author almost start
from scratch on supporting the protocol.

ProLine and ModemWorks have 4modem in their future but I don't know when
Morgan Davis will have that update ready.

4modem is a compromise but an easy one to implement so it may yet catch on
when software authors get the time to make the fairly trivial changes required
to support it.
