I just got a copy of the Apple II System Disk 3.2 yesterday, but I don't have the docs. So, I have a few questions for anyone who is interested in helping. What tool setup.files are necessary for a bare bones Prodos 16 disk? And could anyone tell me what each of the setup files do. How about the new tools sets? Where did the Dialog.icon file go? (the Finder still uses them but the Finder is still the same old version). What is the funny binary file in the fonts sub-directory for? Hopefully, someone out there will be kind enough to answer these questions (and feel free to offer any other interesting info which comes to mind...) For those of you who are interested, here is a dump of the System Disk 3.2 catalog. name type blocks modified access ---- ---- ------ -------- ------ prodos sys 35 14-Jun-88 11:36 AM rwnd B system dir 1 24-Jun-88 5:28 PM rwnd B p8 sys 32 13-Jun-88 9:07 PM rwnd B p16 p16 76 13-Jun-88 9:14 PM rwnd B start s16 1 7-Jun-88 4:09 PM rwnd B system.setup dir 1 21-Jun-88 5:56 PM rwnd B tool.setup str 1 21-Jun-88 4:55 PM rwnd B ts1 $BC 61 21-Jun-88 4:59 PM rwnd B ts2 $BC 28 21-Jun-88 5:01 PM rwnd B atsetup str 1 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B atinit $E2 1 16-Jun-88 4:48 PM rwnd B atpatch $BC 14 16-Jun-88 4:45 PM rwnd B atstart $BC 3 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B pfiload $BC 46 21-Jun-88 3:36 PM rwnd B spload $BC 23 16-Jun-88 4:44 PM rwnd B atrom $BC 22 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B atresponder $BC 17 13-Jun-88 3:31 PM rwnd B tools dir 2 24-Jun-88 10:15 AM rwnd B tool014 tol 40 16-Jun-88 10:38 PM rwnd B tool015 tol 20 16-Jun-88 9:33 PM rwnd B tool016 tol 18 16-Jun-88 10:02 PM rwnd B tool018 tol 33 17-Jun-88 1:24 AM rwnd B tool019 tol 25 24-Jun-88 10:04 AM rwnd B tool020 tol 15 17-Jun-88 1:38 AM rwnd B tool021 tol 26 17-Jun-88 1:41 AM rwnd B tool022 tol 7 17-Jun-88 1:35 AM rwnd B tool023 tol 24 17-Jun-88 1:32 AM rwnd B tool025 tol 12 17-Jun-88 12:49 AM rwnd B tool026 tol 9 21-Jun-88 5:35 PM rwnd B tool027 tol 27 17-Jun-88 1:29 AM rwnd B tool028 tol 8 16-Jun-88 9:39 PM rwnd B tool029 tol 5 16-Jun-88 11:42 PM rwnd B tool032 tol 15 17-Jun-88 12:07 PM rwnd B desk.accs dir 1 23-Jun-88 2:25 PM rwnd B drivers dir 1 24-Jun-88 12:33 PM rwnd B imagewriter drv 45 24-Jun-88 12:21 PM rwnd B imagewriter.lq drv 45 24-Jun-88 12:22 PM rwnd B laserwriter drv 73 17-Jun-88 1:51 AM rwnd B printer drv 5 17-Jun-88 1:18 AM rwnd B modem drv 5 17-Jun-88 1:15 AM rwnd B appletalk drv 7 8-Feb-88 12:46 PM rwnd B apple.midi drv 4 17-Jun-88 12:28 AM rwnd B card6850.midi drv 4 17-Jun-88 12:31 AM rwnd B fonts dir 1 23-Feb-88 4:40 PM rwnd B courier.10 fon 6 27-Nov-86 2:25 PM rwnd B courier.12 fon 7 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B geneva.10 fon 6 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B geneva.12 fon 7 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B helvetica.10 fon 6 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B helvetica.12 fon 7 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B shaston.16 fon 12 22-Apr-87 9:10 AM rwnd B times.10 fon 6 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B times.12 fon 7 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B venice.14 fon 9 27-Nov-86 2:26 PM rwnd B font.lists bin 3 17-Feb-88 10:03 AM rwnd B finder s16 102 1-Mar-88 12:29 PM rwnd B launcher s16 12 16-Jun-88 11:06 PM rwnd B sys.utils dir 1 3-Mar-88 10:28 AM rwnd B sysutil.system sys 3 3-Mar-88 9:37 AM rwnd B util.0 bin 87 3-Mar-88 9:44 AM rwnd B util.1 bin 62 3-Mar-88 10:19 AM rwnd B fastcopy.system sys 40 17-Jul-87 1:55 PM rwnd B basic.system sys 21 14-Dec-87 4:43 PM rwnd B basic.launcher sys 3 12-Jul-87 9:44 PM rwnd B appletalk dir 1 14-Jun-88 3:13 PM rwnd B chooser.ii sys 3 15-Apr-88 11:39 AM rwnd B chooser5.ovr $00 8 13-Jun-88 3:48 PM rwnd B chooser4.ovr $00 7 13-Jun-88 3:48 PM rwnd B chooser3.ovr $00 6 13-Jun-88 3:48 PM rwnd B mtxabs.0 bin 31 28-Jul-87 3:32 PM rwnd B iwem txt 61 18-Apr-88 10:09 AM rwnd B chooser2.ovr $00 5 13-Jun-88 3:48 PM rwnd B chooser1.ovr $00 4 13-Jun-88 3:48 PM rwnd B chooser.0 bin 61 13-Jun-88 3:47 PM rwnd B namer.ii sys 3 15-Apr-88 11:39 AM rwnd B namer.0 bin 61 14-Jun-88 2:27 PM rwnd B icons dir 1 26-Feb-88 12:06 PM rwnd B finder.icons $CA 22 7-Jul-87 3:34 PM rwnd B copy.me bas 1 16-Jul-87 2:51 PM rwnd B blocks free: 71 used: 1529 (96%) total: 1600 ============================================================================== ARPA: aehl@csd4.milw.wisc.edu USMAIL: Donald Aehl Box #204 3400 N. TS1 is for the old ROMs, TS2 is for the new ROMs. If you know the exact machine you will be running on, you can axe one of these. > atsetup str 1 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B > atinit $E2 1 16-Jun-88 4:48 PM rwnd B > atpatch $BC 14 16-Jun-88 4:45 PM rwnd B > atstart $BC 3 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B > pfiload $BC 46 21-Jun-88 3:36 PM rwnd B > spload $BC 23 16-Jun-88 4:44 PM rwnd B > atrom $BC 22 16-Jun-88 4:47 PM rwnd B These seven files are all of the AppleTalk support. It's definitly optional, but may be useful if you are on a large network. > fonts dir 1 23-Feb-88 4:40 PM rwnd B > font.lists bin 3 17-Feb-88 10:03 AM rwnd B This file is put here by Font Manager to help speed up the startup process. Normally on startup, Font Manager reads every file in this folder and builds internal tables of font information. The new version of Font Manager saves some of this information in the FONT.LISTS file. Next time Font Manager is started up, it only has to read files that have been added since the last time it was started up. The speed increase is especially noticable if you have a large number of fonts. The new tools are... #25 - Note Synthesizer #26 - Note Sequencer #29 - ACE (Audio Compression and Expansion) #32 - MIDI Tools The documentation for all of these is quite lengthy. It would be well worth the money to go out and buy the 3.2 documentation. -Paul Wenker prw@meccsd.MECC.MN.ORG -MECC, Technical Services

The funny binary file in the fonts subdirectory (fonts.lst or something like that) contains a list of fonts along with information needed by the font manager so that the individual font files don't have to be opened at boot time to get that information.
