[net.movies] THE KARATE KID

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (07/14/84)

Went to three movies this Saturday (the others reviewed later), and I think
this is one of those that you'd probably enjoy if you paid $2.50 for
admission. However, if you've paid $4-$5 for the privelege, you notice that
the movie is too long... there are some flabby sections in the middle.
However, overall, this is a pretty enjoyable movie, due mainly to the
abilities of Ralph Maccio (sp?) as the kid. Yes, I know Pat Morita has been
getting a lot of press lately as the "winning factor" to this movie, but it
is something he has to share with Maccio. The kid comes off as very
likable. Also, this movie is, like the director's other picture, ROCKY,
very good at suspending the obvious outcome of the movie throughout. We
have some very nasty bad guys (they don't have to be three-dimensional, just
believably nasty, and they are). However, while the action/tension scenes
at the end hold one's attention, it is not a movie for people who demand a
lot of action, or competion (like Rocky). It is for people who don't mind a
2 hour movie and enjoy good characters enough to stick through it. Oh, it
also ends too suddenly.

OK SPOILER MODE BEGINS NOW:

1) I can understand Ralph getting killed over THIS girl, though I believe
it is genitically impossible for any girl of that age to be so, err, amply
well-endowed...

2) The girl's parents are a bit unbelievable. Aren't they? Is there
actually a subgroup of stupid rich people in California?

3) In the last fight scene, the resemblance between Pat Morita and Alec
Guiness was substantial ("Use the force, Daniel....")

4) After looking at Morita's character's house, I now know what happened to
all those great old cars that used to hang around "Arnold's" on "Happy
Days"...
