[net.movies] computer special effects in films

msc@qubix.UUCP (Mark Callow) (07/15/84)

Why do people get so excited about computer special effects in films?
They don't do anything (yet) that couldn't be done by traditional
methods. In fact I think they lose a considerable sense of depth.
DP et al claim they can do it cheaper. I don't know. I'm not a movie
accountant.

On a professional level I have a certain amount of interest since I know
it is quite difficult to produce such complete shaded images. As a
filmgoer I say "big deal". What I look forward to is when they use the
technology to do something original that couldn't be done without it.
