[comp.sys.apple] ProDOS 16 & SHRConvert 2.1

Yet another in a continuing series of odditites...

1. (the familiar outline format) I tried using SHRConvert v2.1 yesterday.
Everything seemed normal; I exited SHRConv, returned to the launcher (I
don't like to wait for the finder), and then restarted SHRConvert.

It had been saved in memory. The disk wasn't accessed; it just started
back up, with the options right where they had been. The image that
had been in memory was gone, though.

This raises some interesting questions like:
   a. How was it retained?
   b. What is the purge level of the allocated memory?
   c. How did ProDOS 16 v1.6 know that it was still in memory?

2. Here's a possible bug in ProDOS/Standard File Operations toolset:

While I was running SHRConvert above, I let it load, switched disks, and
hit the "load" button. I was then allowed to select shaded items from
the file list, but was forced to skip over some files (including a couple
   of subdirectories).

The current prefix had been set to a subdirectoy of the boot disk; the disk
I inserted was Print Shop GS (trying to load a PS graphic file). Note that
the root directory on the PS disk contains no "legal" files for loading,
except for two subdirectories which are searchable.

If I exited the program, came back [this is when I noticed point (1)], and
switched disks AFTER hitting the "load" button, there were no problems.
My guess is that ProDOS is caching the directory (I've had similar problems
in SoundStudio) somehow, but must be picking up random garbage because
the PS directory is twice as large as the dir that SHRConv is in.

It would be difficult to file an official bug report; I'm not sure how to
make it possible for Apple to repeat this bug. Remember, this is a
copy of System Disk v3.2, with ProDOS 16 v1.6 and the ROM upgrade. Still
using my CPS 3.5 drive and 768K of memory.

   Comments? Keith?

3. A side note. I ran the fractal mountain generator for thirteen hours
over the weekend, but it crashed again without completing (although it
got closer than last time). I would recommend removing *all* desk
accessories or anything else if you have 768K of RAM; if you have less,
don't bother with a detail level of 8.
