[comp.sys.apple] archiver for IIe?

holly@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (Joe Hollingsworth) (10/07/88)

Does there exist any type of file archiver such as ARC or ZOO
for the apple IIe? If so where can I find a copy?
Thanks, Joe

BLU? ALU?

If you want something that acts like ARC, talk to Dave Lyons or Don Elton;
such a program would be a great addition to Davex or ECP.

Does anybody know of an Apple // program that does LZW encoding instead
of Huffman?

I can't really say too much at this point, but... There will be an
"ARC"-type format (that won't be outdated for a looong time) coming out
sometime soon, with a program for it (that uses LZW, by the way). I've seen
the specs (they're still being revised), and it looks like it'll be good.

I have the C sources for ARC which will work on MS-DOS or UNIX (various
conditional assembly instructions); it hasn't been outdated for a while...

Anyone want to try a port?

Sure, someone could port an MS-DOS or other ARC over to the //gs
(I don't know about the //e...), but it would be so slow as to be useless,
unless the porter wanted to translate down into assembly, which would be a
fairly large pain in the arsh. When the program I'm talking about gets
released, none of this will matter a whole lot. Sure, it won't be ARC
compatible, but it wouldn't be to tricky to write a converter (for store only
type things, not the compressed stuff). Speaking of which, does anyone have
the file format that ARC uses? If someone does, I'd appreciate it if you could
mail me a copy.
