[comp.sys.apple] Dead Apple IIe....

mmccann@hubcap.UUCP (Mike McCann) (10/17/88)

A friend of mine purchased an AppleIIe a while back in fairly good
condition (used) at a flea market. He decided to put a 3.5" UniDisk in
it recently and is having problems. The UniDisk didnt work in his
machine, so he removed it and was going to do without it. But the
problem began there. After he removed the card, his machine will no
longer boot from disk (with or without UniDisk card). It boots as if no
disk drive card is present with "APPLE ][" at the top of the screen. If
you type in a program, it will run but when you press cntl-reset the
screen turns white and the speaker put out noise (pressing cntl-reset a
few more times will make it stop). One person said his ROMs where gone
(which will cost him about $60 each) another person said to buy a new
motherboard from a company other than Apple to save money. Any
suggestions?

Thanks for the help in advance,

First try a self-test. Then try removing ALL cards and peripherals (except the
monitor), and replacing them one at a time. A new motherboard from an
Apple dealer probably wouldn't be vey expensive (should be about $150
installed).

A) make sure th joystick buttons aren't down, or that the JS is unplugged.

B) make sure that if you have an external speaker connect that it isn't
shorted out. (this happened to me once, and it was *mighty* confusing.
However, this doesn't sound like the same problem.)

C) NEVER NEVER unplug or plug in a UniDisk into the port when the power is
on, or anything into the back of the unidisk. If that was done, go get a
new motherboard.
