Electric Dreams. Stupid but Fun. Hypernerd architectural detailer buys home computer. Through a sequence of improbable events, computer becomes self-aware. Computer is into animation and musical composition, and falls in love with the cellist upstairs. Technically implausible; I suspect only about 70% of the population will be dumb enough to believe a PC can actually do all that. Pretty humorous for the rest of us; I'm sure it was made with tongue firmly in cheek. There was some good-looking abstract animation (a lot of it appeared hand-made then video processed). Some good tunes, including a mix of cello and computer synthesis. The story was a bit hokey, but far better than most things we're seeing this summer. The players were good but not outstanding, and the characters were comfortable. I didn't see a single toy spinoff or video game possibility, although parts might make good videos. Watch until the END of the credits. Bud Cort did the computer's voice, and was the only name I recognized. Over all, I'd say worth $4.50, but not worth having your bicycle stolen from in front of the theater. I will see it again, locking my next bike to something more substantial. Should I have submitted this to net.bicycle, too? -- Keith Lofstrom uucp: {ucbvax,decvax,chico,pur-ee,cbosg,ihnss}!tektronix!vice!keithl CSnet: keithl@tek ARPAnet:keithl.tek@rand-relay

Well, I saw a 'sneak preview' of Electric Dreams Saturday. I think that it's one of the best (most enjoyable) films of the summer. The movie is well edited, it's not too fast and it never seems to drag either. The characters seem real enough. Perhaps it's just that I appreciate most of the humor in alot of the early scenes, but I really enjoyed the movie. The music throughout is well chosen (I also really enjoy electronic/classical music). Baron's Music Video experience is put to very good use. At first, the story seemed to believe in the real universe, but after a while it goes quite far beyond reality (A PC just can't do some of these things). The initial plunge off the deep end startled me a little, possibly because I am more aware of the reality of the first part than the avarage movie goer, but once you accept that this isn't quite the real world, it's alot of fun. I highly recommend the film. marcus ..!ihnp4!tellab1!tellab2!thoth
