Apple-Period will work very nicely in that situation.  It will also abort
a sign-on sequence, or actually almost *anything* that you might want to
abort.  If a long menu is getting filled in across the phone and you just
want one of the first options anyway, you can Apple-Period to make it
stop.  Same goes for categories and topics inside the "Let's Discuss..."
areas of forums.
