The Last Starfighter was a decent movie but it definitely
wasn't great. The special effects are good but they look a little TOO
computer generated. Here are a few faults that bothered me:

The bad guys weren't evil enough. They were certainly ugly but I
could care less who controlled the universe. The "good guys" also
seemed neutral too me.

There wasn't enough action. The climactic battle only lasted 5
minutes. With all the build up, I was disappointed with how short
the space fighting was (with only one good part.) Maybe with the
high cost of the computer generated scenes they ran out of money.

A too obvious Star Wars rip-off: the Darth Vader-like escape from
the ship by the big bad guy (setting up (on no) a sequel.)

Grig, the alien navigator, reminded me too much of Roddy McDowell's
ape character. He had the same expressions and the exact same alien
cuteness. He just wasn't an original idea for a character.

In spite of all this, I enjoyed parts of The Last Starfighter. I
just don't think it belongs in the same category (or even the same
sentence) as Star Wars.
