[comp.sys.apple] GS/OS and build your own SCSI HD confusion

DMG4449@RITVAX.BITNET (12/04/88)

I am a bit confused about some things concerning GS/OS and I need more
information about SCSI hard drives and interface cards.

While I seem to recall there was a lot of talk about what hard drives and
interface cards GS/OS would work with, I paid little attention because, at
the time, I was still plugging away with my //e. I finally did get a GS.
Right now, I have a good 'ol faithful Sider 10 mb hard drive. I recall
many peole saying that GS/OS would not run on it until an upgrade came out.
With a little ingenuity, I have been able to put GS/OS, ProDOS 16, ProDOS 8,
HyperLaunch & ProSEL on the same volume. The only problem I have seen thusfar
is that ProDOS 16 doesnt seem to like to switch back to prosel or to GS/OS,
but everything else works great. What is it about using an Apple SCSI card
with a SCSI drive that would make that drive work any better than my sider
with GS/OS? When run from the Sider, GS/OS recognized the device just fine.

Now, I am thinking of upgrading to a 30-40+ mb hard drive system. Quite
some time ago (21 Aug 88 to be specific) Dean Gehnert wrote up an informative
guide to building your own scsi system. This called for buying a st-157n
(seagate) hard drive, a cms controller, a special db25-50 pin connector, and
power supply for hd. Now I hear that the CMS controller doesnt "support" GS/OS.
That means I should probably build the system with an Apple SCSI card,
especially since they are relatively the same price. However, I need to know
the following: would the cable for Apple SCSI to ST-157n be the same
cable as the CMS SCSI to ST-157n? Does the Apple SCSI card some with HD
formatting software, and if not, what would I use to format the hard drive?
Why the heck won't GS/OS work with the CMS drive anyway and why IS it working
with my Sider (so it seems at least). The only notable difference I see is
that if you boot GS/OS without using the hard drive first or running it from
HD, it doesnt recognize the hard drive as existing, but of course, this is
an easy problem to solve. Two more questions: Do all SCSI hard drives have
the same pin-out (so I could buy Joe Generic SCSI HD) or do I have to be wary
because each manufacturer uses a different pinout? Also, can anyone reccommend
other types/models of scsi drives 30-60mb capacity that i might want to look
into (price is an important consideration...)
