I think you are giving it too much credit. For me it was only a muppet movie (a decent muppet movie) with some curious plot lines. The target audience is kids; no specific philosophy is peddled; the good prevails; a bit of zen stuff (if there was any) makes it somewhat more memorable. It has that absolute minimum of moral controversy that is present in SW (father-son stuff) and other fantasy films. Mike Musing

Originally, Dark Crystal was much longer. The Skeksis spoke a foreign language and there were several sub-plots. Upon previewing the movie to an audience in Washington, D.C., Henson found people walking out claiming that the movie was too slow and too hard to follow.
