[comp.sys.apple] In Cider

lexter@pro-abilink.UUCP (Sam Robertson) (01/04/89)

Have any of you read the article about BBS's in In Cider. Didn't mention much
about Proline. I was sorta surprised, I have look at all the products that
were listed and I was not more impressed with any of them as I am with
Proline. Ever since SAW had setup the system here in Abilene, we have had
more people call our system than we had when we were running GBBS Pro (God
help us!).
In my mind Proline is the best Host system around for the II computers.
 Sam

There's two major reasons for the fact that ProLine is not as popular/metioned
as GBBS "Pro".

1) GBBS "Pro" (currently v1.3j, although a new one is expected sometime soon
under a new name), is much cheaper than ProLine. If I remember correctly
I saw GBBS "Pro" v1.3j selling for approx. $119, including the Land of Spur
game. On the other hand, ProLine sells for $195 or such -- that is a large
difference when you consider that a number of sysops would rather save that
$74 and use it towards a faster modem/hard drive/any other possibilities.

2) GBBS "Pro" is many times easier to use/program than ProLine -- all you need
is a text-based word processor, and you're set to write your own BBS. All
it takes is a bit of experimenting, and you can write a whole new systevm
in a little less than two weeks (including testing) -- I know, I've done
   it.

Now that I think about it, there is another reason:

3) GBBS "Pro" is many times easier to pirate than ProLine (considering the
size of the two, one is just a disk or two, and the other requires 5 MB's
of data files, if I remember correctly).

No, I don't pirate, I'm just pointing out the facts. I must admit though, I
prefer ProLine to GBBS anyday, but then again, I prefer a nice mini running
BSD 4.2/System V over ProLine. :-)
