Hmmm... and I just got a message from someone else who failed to get
a valid file returned in response to a GET command under similar
circumstances.

LISTSERV is SUPPOSED to know that mail has to be limited to 80 columns,
but possibly under the JOB facility it "forgets" (??)

Sooo... try one more time but use:

INDEX APPLE2-L FF=PUNCH

and use GET80 APPLE2-L yy-nnnnn

instead of GET APPLE2-l etc.

That will FORCE an 80 column response, and should produce valid mail
(if my diagnosis is correct).

According to the American Facsimile Association, more than half the calls
from Japan to the U.S. are fax calls.  FAX it to me at: 1-203-486-5246
