I think that "Metropolis", from the Twenties, and "Things to Come", from the Thirties, both qualify as serious sf movies. Both were definitely science fiction, and both were attempts to deal with important themes in a futuristic setting. I've never heard of a film version of "Brave New World" prior to the fairly recent TV version. Also, the film version of "1984" might be considered sf; it was made in the late Fourties or early Fifties, if my memory serves me (which it might not).
