[comp.sys.apple] Is anyone using Apple ///s as dumb terminals?

tbetz@spies.UUCP (Tom Betz) (01/25/89)

I have been maintaining a system using Apple ///s on a Corvus Constellation II
network for the last 5 years. We recently bought a 386 Xenix machine, and I am
in the process of setting it up, with an eye on rewriting our software package
(I hope for the last time) on top of an RDBMS on the Xenix machine, and using
our existing ///s as dumb (well, slightly intelligent) terminals, running some
emulation software. Both On Three's Communications Manager and Apple's Access
/// do a pretty good job of emulating a vt-52, which should be sufficient unto
our needs.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to get them to talk with our 386 machine's
multiport card (a Wyse WY-995). I'm using Apple's null modem cable, but
perhaps it isn't null enough... setting either package at 9600/n8 (I have no
control over stop bits) I get an open-apple symbol where I should get a line
of text when I run the 995's diagnostic software. I tried hacking the .RS232
driver's DCB (as per the Standard Device Drivers manual) to no avail.

Has anyone gotten these things to work as direct-connect terminals? Is there
another software package out there (antiquated though it might be) that will
serve me better than the software I have now?

Any and all advice appreciated. I have the greatest doubts that anyone else
could possibly be interested in my results, but if you are, express that
interest, and I'll be happy to forward my answers to you.
