Does anyone out there in netland know where John Wayne got the nickname, "The Duke" ?

A recent article in the Los Angeles Times about the recently installed
statue of John Wayne in front of a Great Western Savings out here said
that "The Duke" nickname came from his childhood dog, also called "duke".
