[comp.sys.apple] 5 1/4" drive chaining

mcgurrin@MITRE.ARPA (01/30/89)

I remeber this being discussed a long time ago, but don't remember the content.
I currently have an Apple IIGS with a hard disk (slot 7), a 3 1/2 inch apple
drive, and a 5 1/4 inch apple drive, the latter running from a controller
card in slot 6. I understand I can daisy chain the 5 1/4" drive from the
3 1/2" drive by simply buying the proper cable. Questions:

1. Is this correct, and if so, where can one purchase such a cable?
2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this, specifically,
    a) will the drive still appear as slot 6, drive 1 to old software which
       requires this?
    b) does this free up slot 6 for other cards, or must I leave it free do
       (I mean due) to mapping?

Any and all information appreciated. Thanks!!

If you are just running one 5.25" drive from the controller card
you can get on of the adapters to hook the older 5.25" drives to
the Apple //c. They will work here to. If you want to daisy-chain
two 5.25" drives, a few companies make custom adapters. You should
be able to find a source in the back of Apple mags (A+, InCider,
	Nibble)

> 2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this, specifically,

Advantages:	A: Reduced power consumption and heat. Granted
it won't be much, but at time, every bit counts.

B: The built in code allows for full scanning
of drives while booting. Your current controller
card won't allow this. The Slot 6 code will.
You probably won't notice this with a hard disk
			in slot 7.

Disadvantages:	A: Added cost of buying the adapter.

B: Added expense that you Apple Disk 3.5's have
a faulty controller board. You won't have to pay
for the replacement controller board. Just taking
it to the shop, waiting for it to get fixed, and
going back to pick it up.

	Yes.

Unless the card only need to draw power from the slot, you'll have to
	leave the slot free.

	Your Welcome.

Yes, you really can hook up your 5.25 inch drive to the daisy chain with the proper connector. It will be recognized as slot 6 drive 1 just like normal but, you guessed it, slot sic can't be set to "your card". I'm pretty sure that a couple of cards with still work in slot 6 though (like the Transwarp GS or Ramfactor) but I wouldn't try using a super serial card in that slot.

Yes, this is correct. You can get a cable for about $10 from JameCo
Electronics, which is where I got mine.

I believe that with your setup, it will appear as slot 6, drive 1.

I think you can then re-use slot 6. I really haven't tried it. Basically,
when I don't want to wait forever for the Finder to check my 5.25" drive, and
I'm not actually using my 5.25" drive (which is most of the time), I simply
disconnect the cable before power-up, which is a lot easier than opening up
the machine and pulling out the cable or the interface card. That's the main
advantage from my point of view.

I've since realized that you can de-activate any device by pulling up the
device info and checking the "inactive" box. Then, after you re-boot the
system, the device will not be used. This is much more desirable than having
to power down the machine to unplug the cable. Thanks, Apple!

-> 1. Is this correct, and if so, where can one purchase such
-> a cable?
Yes you can do that as long as they are the same type drive (same
connector). You don't need a special cable. I would suggest putting the
3.5 drive first in the chain. There is a plate in the back of the drive.
Just remove it and plug in the 5.25 drive. Make sure that you set this up
in system set up. I think you want to set them to smart port.
-> a) will the drive still appear as slot 6, drive 1 to
-> old software which requires this?
Yes it will appear as s6,d1.
-> b) does this free up slot 6 for other cards, or must I
-> leave it free to do mapping?
No. This will not free up the acutal slot. Although there isn't a card
there it will still need to use the slot for mapping and such.

Hope this info helps.
