Are there any apple II implementations of Fido-net software and where
can I get them? Or find out more about them and Fido-net itself?

Yes there are you could purchase ProLine, which is a UNIX like system
for the apple //. If you look carefully at some peoples addresses
you will notice that they are sending messages from a proline site.
Morgan Davis wrote proline and he can be reached on the net here.

Also the authors of GBBS are planing on putting out a program called
MultiPro which is a networked version of GBBS, and i think it will also
allow you to communitated with proline sites and usenet sites.
