[net.movies] Dreamscape

ables@ut-ngp.UUCP (King Ables) (08/15/84)

Saw an advance preview of DREAMSCAPE last night, so I can be fairly
sure of being at least one of the first to have anything to say about
it. I hadn't heard much about it except the title when I saw it.

It was great! Fun, exciting. Seemed like a cross between Brainstorm
and The Three Days Of The Condor. Maybe a little predictable in spots,
but fun nevertheless. Special effects aren't bad, but they're a little
strange sometimes. Two or three startling things (actions). It's
PG-13, and might deserve it (assuming you thought Indiana Jones deserved
it, which I did *not*). There's a couple of Indiana Jones type of scenes.
Kate Capshaw(sp?) does not hum the theme to Raiders as she did in Best
Defense, however.

Brief non-spoiler: Eddie Albert is the President and is having nightmares
about nuclear (notice, NOT nu-cu-lear!) aftermath. Christopher Plumber
is a power hungry aid. Max Von Sydow and Kate Capshaw are scientists
doing dream research at some university. Dennis Quaid is our hero, Alex,
who is a former research guinea pig who had enough of scientific research
and took his mental powers to the race track to support himself. Alex
seems to be this summer's hero name! George Wendt (Cheers) is... well,
maybe you should see for yourself, but he's pretty good in a small part.

It was nice to see Eddie Albert doing something again. I sure like
him (maybe I just identify with him since Green Acres, a sane man
surrounded by lunatics :-) ). He's not used a lot, but he's good.
Kate is underutilized, too, for the talent I think she has, although,
her part is better than either in Best Defense or Indiana Jones.
Dennis Quaid and Max Von Sydow have the most exposure (at least it seemed
this way to me) and were both very good in their parts. Quaid sure
reminds me of Harrison Ford in a couple of scenes. One where he and
Max are talking reminded me a lot of Han talking to Obi-wan in the
Cantina!

Well, I've already said enough, I can *highly* recommend this movie,
$4.00 on a scale of $4.50 (why not rate 'em on a scale we can use,
right?).
