CEO file contents:
Hi Everyone! I've been reading this newsgroup for two years, and never
submitted anything - I think its finally time to come out of the closet
and into the news group.
I'd like to start off by thanking all the supportive contributers to this
news group. You have all directly influenced my decisions about my home
computers. I currently have a ][+, a ][ (serial # 2,048?) and a IIGS.
If I hadn't been on the network, I don't know that I would have gotten
my GS. Enough mushy-ness - on to the issues why I really wrote this...
Hard disk drives:
From what I've read, the Apple II SCSI card is compatable with all
macintosh hard disks (the SCSI card and the mac disks use 25 pin
connectors). Someone in the Washington User Group (Apple Pie?)
bought one and got it working on his GS - I found an artical in
their newsletter that I got at the last AppleFest in Boston.
I'll be trying this method myself in the near future.
Memory:
Where can I find some cheap memory to upgrade my GS? I have an
apple memory expansion board with 256K on it - Where can I find
the 768K that would fill it up for a reasonable price? Should
I trade it in for a AI memory board (IE: 1M) ?
GS/OS:
GS/OS is one the BEST operating system that I've programmed with.
I started out with ProDOS 16, system disk 3.1 - and the speed to
do anything was horrible. I really like the speed of GS/OS -
the engineers at Apple really need to be commended on it!
They have implemented things that other companies are just starting
to do something about (The disk cache is already in GS/OS - but
we won't have one out to customers of AOS/VS II for at least
another 6 months). I have a lot more learning to do, but from
what I've seen - I'm impressed!!!
As for certain programs crashing - most of the problems don't
seem to be the OS (according to David Lyons). Some problems
won't be fixed for a while because of bad support for the
product - maybe getting everyone to complain to the companies
instead of just one or two people might make a difference.
For CDAs/NDAs that crash - try to get to the author. If you
can't, then at least tell everyone here so that we know what
is broken.
Games:
I highly recommend Arkanoid, Tetris and Zany Golf. I'm the most
amazed with Arkanoid. But all of them are great! What about
you? What games do you play with on your GS?
WordProcessors:
I use FreeWriter/FreePrinter for most of my word processing - I'm
about to order WordPerfect. I have Writers Choice Elite - but its
far too slow for me to use it.
C compilers:
I have the sources to the GNU C compiler v1.30 - they are HUGE
(about 4.5M!). I don't think I'll be able to figure them out
enough to get a GS C compiler. I'm trying to get the sources
to the C compiler recently posted for an Atari ST (Sokoban).
They are smaller (about 200K or arc'd file). If I can get them
then I'll send them to who-ever is interested (and I'll be trying
to port it to the GS myself - I'll send status as I make progress).
I think I'd better stop now - seems I hit 60+ lines without even starting
to say all that I wanted to. I'm going to have to try posting more
questions to things now...
