[comp.sys.apple] File transfer UCSD -> DOS3.3

gert@prls.UUCP (Gert Slavenburg) (03/09/89)

My question regards how to transfer a DATA (non text, but 8 bit bytes) file
from UCSD Pascal to DOS3.3 format diskettes on an Apple ][+. Are there
utilities to do this, and if so, who could help me to a copy/pointer.

As alternative, I could KERMIT or XMODEM the file back and forth to my other
computer(s), if I had a KERMIT for both UCSD and DOS3.3. Do these exist ?

If you have any answers/suggestions, I would appreciate your e-mail response
to the address below (I don't really read this group).

  Thanks,
  Gert Slavenburg (UUCP : ..!pyramid!prls!gert)

Assuming that you do not have a random access file that you need to convert,
I think that Universal File Conversion, published by Quality Software (1986
address was 21601 Marilla St., Chatsworth CA 91311) should do your job. It
converts between PASCAL, DOS3.3, ProDOS, and CP/M. I have used it only with
text files (USCD PASCAL to ProDOS), but the only exclusion the manual makes
is random access files. List price was $35.

I suggest that you try the Chameleon program (it is files 87-00030
and 87-00031 on the APPLE2-L list server at the BITNET node BROWNVM).
I have never tried it with DATA files, but I have used it for TEXT
files. Moreover, the price is sure right.

When I had a bunch of Apple Pascal (UCSD) DATA files to transfer over
to DOS 3.3 (or ProDOS), I wrote a Pascal program to read the files
and write them out as TEXT files. I then used the System Utilities
program on one of the old system disks to convert the TEXT file to
the DOS of my choice.

The Chameleon will work, but unfortunately, it can't be retrieved from a
UUCP address <prls>. Since you've already supplied the file numbers,
I'll retrieve a copy and email it (just this once!!)

NOTE!!! The Chameleon is *** SHAREWARE *** I've forgotten what the
price is ($25??) but it really isn't much considering how handy the program
is if you really have a need for it! If you use it (ESPECIALLY if it saves
you a lot of work), you really ought to (gladly) send in the fee.
