>The last several issues of MacWeek have described how Apple is in >rather serious financial trouble right now. Apparently, the rise Rather doubtful; Apple still has one of the great cash hordes in the Western World. >in memory costs and their subsequent, across the board price-hike >has caused sales last quarter to plummet. No matter how many classes on price elasticity are taught in no matter how many MBA programs, the notion that you can't *always* "pass the cost increase along to the consumer" doesn't seem to sink in (or, some people have to learn the hard way). Plummet, by the way, probably overstates. Apple IS to be credited for catching on before things really did become serious -- many other American industries have failed to rectify mistakes until things are COMPLETELY out of hand - Lockheed, Chrysler, the Savings & Loan Industry (which us taxpayers may actually have to pay for this time). >I want to buy a Apple3.5 for my new GS, but $369 is out of my reach. >Worse, the price for the same device was as much as $50 less two >months or so ago. And I bought 1000 shares of LTV at $8.50 six months before they declared Chapter 11 and the price plunged to $1.88; so what else is new? If you wait LONG enough, you'll be able to get a 20Mbyte "floptical" drive for little more than the present price of the Apple3.5 (or maybe not; buying and selling is a calculated risk). Price changes (up AND down) are a fact of real life. BTW if you couldn't afford to pay $319, what difference does it make that the price changed to $369 (100% of nothing is still...)? You should have also pointed out that the reason for the high 3.5'' drive prices is the rising cost of RAM chips. Apple even raised the prices of the Macs too. Speaking of which...
