[comp.sys.apple] THE FINAL WORD ON 3.5 DISK DRIVES

sk2f+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Seth D. Kadesh") (03/13/89)

There was an article in (I think) the November '88 issue of A+ which said
exactly what works with what, but from
memory:

  FOR ALL THE CONFUSED PEOPLE OUT THERE (I know, I was one :-)

DRIVE           WORKS ON                WITH
=====           =========               =====
Apple 3.5 GS, (any) Mac plugs directly in
Unidisk 3.5 GS, Apple II(e) plugs directly in GS, uses controller
card for II
Central Point
  3.5 Drive any II, any Mac controller card for II, plug in directly
for Mac

(NOTE: I don't know what works on a IIc, IIc+ as I do not work with them.
Rather than posting incorrect info, I chose not to include them. Check out the
A+ article [I'm pretty sure it was Nov '88,])

Reliability
=======
The Central Point drive is not reliable on the GS. The controller card does not
perfectly emulate Apple's drivers; as a consequence, many commercial software
products will NOT boot. This may have changed (Central Point Software updates
the roms sometimes), but it is recommended that you test the drives with your
favorite software.

The Apple brand drives should have no problems (other than a slightly slower
speed for the Unidisk on a GS).

The new Applied Engineering drive should be interesting - plugs directly into
the GS (should be 100% compatible) and retails for at least $100 less than the
Apple 3.5 drive. DO NOT BUY ONE UNTIL YOU HAVE TESTED YOUR SOFTWARE ON IT!!!

Try saying "Apple 3.5 drive"
Doesn't it sound funny.....?

This is correct, I have a Central Point drive and controller and I can't boot
some of the software made for the //gs. HOWEVER, I take issue with you for
making this statement under the heading of "Reliability". My drive (which is
used as my second 3.5 drive) has no _reliability_ problems. It always works
predictably and never "looses data" or acts "flaky". It either will or
will not boot the software. Also note, there are several pieces of software
(Paintworks II, Mean 18, etc.) which once booted, will run on this drive.
