[comp.sys.apple] A reeeely simple-minded question.

Hi,

sorry if (1) this isn't the right newsgroup for this query and (2) this
query is much too dim for you all, but I've got a pretty basic Apple
LaserWriter IInx problem. We have recently got one of these from our American
buddies, with an american papertray. We want to use an A4 tray, since we're
bound to run out of american-sized paper sooner or later ...

Sending a PostScript program to the printer with the A4 tray inserted gives
the error : rangecheck on command Lettertray at line 1. I cannot find any
info on
this in the manual for the Laser Writer. I suspect that it's something to
do with the setup options in statusdict, but I cannot change these using
the postscript programs given in the manual - they don't work for me.

I tried the following ( and several variations .. ! )

%!PS
serverdict begin 0 exitserver
statusdict begin 25 9600 0 setsccbatch

just to see if I could reset permanent options. It doesn't work, due to
"stackunderflow : offending command :Begin " at line 2, which has me stumped.

I can read the settings ok, the following prog works fine :

/Times-Roman findfont 14 scalefont setfont
/cr{ show 182 currentpoint 20 sub exch pop moveto} def
/tb{show 300 currentpoint exch pop moveto} def
/which{ 5 -1 roll 4 exch sub -1 roll cr 3{pop} repeat } def
statusdict begin 25 sccbatch end 182 650 moveto
exch (Baud :)tb 10 string cvs cr
(Parity:)tb dup 30 bitshift -30 bitshift
(none-space) (odd) (even) (none-mark) which
(Handshake:)tb dup 27 bitshift -29 bitshift
(XON/XOFF) (DSR/DTR) (ETX/ACK) (bad value) which
(Data bits:)tb dup 25 bitshift -30 bitshift
(standard) (7) (8) (bad value) which
(Stop bits:)tb -7 bitshift 0 eq{ (1) } { (2) } ifelse
show showpage

So, how can we set the printer up for an A4 tray ??

We don't have a MAC, nor easy access to one. We use the ScriptMaster
print spooler on a uVAX to send files to the laserwriter.

Please respond directly to me, as I don't read this newsgroup.
