Thank you to everyone on the net who has been helping me with my questions about Apple's memory layout, Pascal RAM card drivers I/O space.... In reference to PCPI: I am expecting a BIOS listing for Applicard CP/M SOON! I am also waiting for some "stuff" from Franklin. Anything pd will be shared. Any questions I can answer then will be responded to. I am hoping to get more traditional Apple software (graphics, etc.) running from CP/M. This is possible now, but involves knowing about the Applicard's use of 6502 memory to avoid clobbering anything delicate. Does anyone have a list of the switches for the upper 16K RAM/ROM? How about a list of pokes for all the text/graphics combinations? (I think I might have the latter, and I'll post it if I find it.--short) Has anyone configured MEX or IMP to use an Avatex 1200 modem? How about a Pascal program/driver? Jeff asks... >1. For those of you who shout "Apple II Forever": Why? I think you have a very legit point here - granted, no computer will last forever. Nor should they - technology progresses, systems become more advanced. Wasn't there an Apple I at one time? And an Apple III, and a Lisa - and they have become more or less a memory (I remember wanting an Apple III long ago...:-) ) >2. For those of you who would NEVER buy a Mac over an Apple II: Why not? > Do you know what's available for the Mac? Yes, I know of many excellent packages available for a Mac. I work with them extensivly at school for desktop publishing, communications, etc.. I also know that they are extremely overpriced. Why would we "never buy a Mac over an Apple II"? Let me answer that with a question: Have you ever been to a store where the service was SO terrible that you decided that NO MATTER what excellent products they may sell, because they treated you so poorly, you will NEVER go back. It's the basic laws of a service-oriented economy. If Apple thinks that it is so special that it can ignore it's ORIGINAL customers that made it what it is today, then they will soon become merely a memory, to be QUICKLY bypassed by other companies that do take care of its customer (NeXT? Amiga?). I think that we Apple II users realize that in this overinflated price - machine, we are also paying for: 1. R&D (no no no... not for the newest Mac, for OUR machine. I'm SURE there are lots of things that can be done to improve the II series. Apple, are you telling us that you are incabable of improving it any? You seem to have been saying that hardware-wise the past few years with the GS) 2. Service: This, I am proud to say, has been more than extrordinary - but by no part was it Apple's doing. My dealer (Computerworks, Bellevue NE) (which I am in no way related to) has spent many an hour supporting their customers. When I had difficulties with GS/OS system disk crashing after having it for a week (drive just stopped reading after 5 seconds, bar kept moving, then just hung) they spent almost 2 hours working on it (then their system disks did it too) 3. Hardware/System software. Thank you for System Disk 4.0 Now what about some hardware improvements? I can't believe ANY company would leave the future of it's line to a third party (Transwarp GS, etc). This is a prime example of a company ASKING people to go elsewhere. >3. For those who hate the desktop/windows/mice enviroment: Why? Note that > this question really is for two groups of people: those who hate > the interface as it is implemented on the GS, and those who hate > the whole IDEA of the desktop interface. O.K... I'm a WIMP. >4. For everybody: What computer would you buy if the Apple II were killed > off, and you HAD to buy a new machine. Why? How does the choice > of computer depend on the reason for buying it. Maybe a Sun Workstation?:-) It just seems to me that if a corporation is "too good to support the people that made them what they are" then they don't need us nor our dollars. Actually, if that's their attitude, (which I'm afraid MANY of us are coming to believe) they don't need to be in business at all. I get the feeling it's the old "We are a REAL business now... we sell Macs, we don't want to be embarressed that we were once a home computer company. Either buy a Mac or go away..." Tell me that, and I will. >-- >Jeff Erickson \ Internet: krazy@claris.com AppleLink: Erickson4 >Claris Corporation \ UUCP: {ames, apple, portal, sun, voder}!claris!krazy >415/960-2693 \________________________________________________________ >____________________/ "I'm so heppy I'm mizzabil!" -- Krazy Kat <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> Jamie Saker Bitnet: JSAKER@UNOMA1 GEnie: JSAKER1 <> <> Communications/ Internet:JSAKER@zeus.unl.edu Sysop Wild West BBS<> <> Journalism Major USMail: 817 N. 47th St. #7 3/12/24(soon 96) <> <> Photojournalist Omaha, NE 68132 <> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> Univ Nebraska at Omaha
