[comp.sys.apple] Apple2-l and comp.binaries.apple2

lwv@n8emr.UUCP (Larry W. Virden) (03/28/89)

This is to give you some more information on the 'binaries' group for Apple
2 users. The binaries group actually consists of several parts:

On bitnet, there is an Apple 2 listserver called Apple2-l. It is at Brownvm
and to submit items to it of a non-proprietary nature (that is, dont send
something that is pirated), send either the source code, a 4 bit compacted
Executioner, or a Binscii file to apple2-l@brownvm. NEVER SEND QUESTIONS to
this address. For that matter, I dont think that comments should go there
unless they detail solutions to unpacking and using software that exists
on the archive, etc.

To get things from the server, you have to be able to sucessfully navigate
the waters of Bitnet mail. Send mail to listserv@brownvm (note the different
address), and ask it to either:

index apple2-l

or

send apple2-l YY-00nnnn where YY is the year that the item was posted
to the archive and nnnn is a sequence number. Obviously, do that index first
so that you have some idea what you are retrieving.

I thing that you could also send to listserv@brownvm a message to
subscribe to apple2-l ,so that you automatically get each now posting -
but I dont remember the format. If someone else supplies this - PLEASE
mention how to get off the list.

I dont know how via bitnet you get these messages - so I guess if someone
wants to pipe up on that as well I would appreciate it.

Otherwise you may very well be getting this message via comp.sys.apple.
This is distributed thru much of the world as a part of 'usenet'/uucp/nntp/
and a number of other protocols. Since each system works differently in
this arena, I cannot give too much blanket help other than to suggest
that you talk to your system administrator to ask about comp.binaries.apple2,
which is the usenet counterpart to apple2-l.

WARNING in neither case should you ever post binary files - they will not
properly be able to unpack by others. Use one of the above mentioned methods
to get your code to others.

Thank you
