CEO summary: I recently got a CMS 60M harddrive for my GS and tried to install GS/OS on it (after removing the Desktop Selector they install gratis for ya). I couldnt install from the System Tools disk as evertime I tried, it would pop up an alert box and say "File not found" but wouldnt tell me which one. Anyways, I did a "manual" install of the system and ran into another snag. I use Startpic and Startsound by Guy Rice. I can use Startpic fine but when Startsound tries to run, all I hear is some humming. Is there a problem with using the CMS and Startsound that someone can help me fix? Where can I reach Guy Rice about this? Anyone?!? Bruce (KAHN@ADAM.DG.COM)

It's possible that the drive may be blocking/stepping on interrupt vectors that Startsound uses... > Bruce (KAHN@ADAM.DG.COM) -- fadden@cory.berkeley.edu (Andy McFadden) ...!ucbvax!cory!fadden labc-3dc@widow.berkeley.edu

This happened to me once. As it turned out, I had used the Finder to make a file-by-file copy of /SYSTEM.TOOLS and /SYSTEM.DISK, and was trying to install from that. But the Installer script requires the file FINDER.DEF, so that new users have some Finder defaults. In a file-by-file copy, Finder doesn't copy it's own data files, so the copied disks wound up missing a file the script wanted to Install. Actually, this happened to me one day before 4.0 was supposed to go Golden Master, on a Saturday. Caused some of the Apple II System Software people to get worried enough to come in on Saturday morning to track it down. You should have heard the combination relief/annoyance when they found it wasn't a GS/OS or Installer bug.
