[comp.sys.apple] DBMS for IIE

reggie@dinsdale.paradyne.com (George W. Leach) (03/29/89)

I have been asked by someone who owns an Apple IIE to discover if
there is an application package availabel to suit a need that he has.
This person is not very familiar with computers and has inherited the
IIE. After listening to what this person would like to do I have
concluded that what they want is a relational database system with the
ability to creata, destroy, manipulate, and query against relations
via a forms oriented interface.

Is anyone aware of such a product or a similar file management
system that would allow for queries and sorts via any attribute?
I told this person that the chances were probably not very good for
finding something along these lines. The IIE appears to be directed
at the educational market and the DBMS software is generally more
likely to be found on machines intended for the business world, eg.
the Mac.

Any pointers would be appreciated. I am not knowledgeable in
this area. *** Please respond via e-mail. I do not read this
newsgroup. ***

Thank You,

George

I received several replies to my recent inquiry concerning the
availability of a relational DBMS for the Apple IIE. I think I better
post a summary now for fear of receiving yet even more replies in this
vein :-)

I would like to thank the following people for their input to
this. Their comments are included below:

Steve Adams, Southwestern Bell Tele. Co. - St Louis, MO
Joe Craparotta, Digital Equipment Corporation - ?
Paul Nakada, Harvard University - Cambridge, MA
	ihlpf!bird, AT&T BTL(?) - Indian Hills, IL
Rich Sims, Pro-Exchange - Hollywood, FL

And here are the replies (edited to save space)

While I haven't yet purchased it, I've heard that DBMaster Professional
is probably the one-remaining cadillac relational dbms for appleIIe. From what
I've heard/read, it sounds very similar to an Informix-package. Costs around
$300.00.

There is a fairly comprehensive DBMS package called DB Master from
Stone Edge Technologies, Inc.
PO Box 200
Maple Glen PA 19002
(215) 641-1825

This is abig package intended for the serious user...

Another package is Profiler.. a kind of glorified recipe box type
DBMS.. It has faiirly good fformating etc, but not ver powerful..
somewhat cheaper too...

Profiler 3.0
Pinpoint Publishing
5865 Doyle St suite 112
Emeryville CA 94608
(415) 654 3050

At first glance i'd day that profiler is the way to go...
DBMaster looks pretty powerful... profiler's claim to fame is ease of
use..

prices from programs plus
800 832 3201

dbmaster v5	$145
dbmaster pro	$195
profiler v3.0	$74

hope this helps.. enjoy..

Sorry to break this to you but there IS a great relational databse
program for the // line that runs in 128K. It is DB Master
Professional. It retails for $300 and can be bought from Programs
plus for $195. If your friend has a large problem to solve then he
should look into 3.25 Apple disk drives and an Ohio Kache, Kache
card so the speed is reasonable. Another alternative is a hard
disk. Both of these last two solutions are expensive, however if
the problem is large 9data wise) then it stands to reason the
benefits to having such a program/hardware configuration are also
large.

Subject: DBMS for Apple //e

Although your perceptions of the //e (entire II line, really) are
quite correct, there may be some degree of hope for this particular
individual.

Stone Edge Technologies produces a database in two versions - called
"DB Master Version Five" and "DB Master Version Five Professional",
which sell for $179 and $295, respectively. I have no specific
knowedge of these two packages, but have used earlier versions and
the interface was precisely as you described. As to capabilties,
information releases on these two version appear to indicate that
they have the required power. The Professional version is claimed to
be a true relational database.

For further information, I would suggest that you contact the
publisher.

There is also a support forum for Stone Edge products on Compuserve
in the Apple Vendor's Forum. (GO APPVENA)

I hope this is of some help to you.
