At the risk of becoming a Salman Rushdie for comp.sys.apple, I'd like to
ask a few questions. Since I would like to hear from everyone, please
>MAIL< your answers to me, unless you think they deserve to be heard by
everyone else. I will post a summary of the information I've gathered
after a week or so.
1. For those of you who shout "Apple II Forever": Why?
2. For those of you who would NEVER buy a Mac over an Apple II: Why not?
Do you know what's available for the Mac?
3. For those who hate the desktop/windows/mice enviroment: Why? Note that
this question really is for two groups of people: those who hate
the interface as it is implemented on the GS, and those who hate
the whole IDEA of the desktop interface.
4. For everybody: What computer would you buy if the Apple II were killed
off, and you HAD to buy a new machine. Why? How does the choice
of computer depend on the reason for buying it.
Please realize that I am not being facetious. These questions have bothered
me for some time now (about two and a half years, actually), and this seems
like the perfect place to have them answered.
Please *MAIL* you responses to krazy@claris.com (Internet) or
ames!claris!krazy (UUCP). Thanks.

I'd like to toss in answers to two of your questions. On question 2, why should we the consumer continue to support a company that failed to support us (if they drop the II line). Being burned once is an accident, being burned twice in the same way is stupidity.. How would we know that history would not repeat itself a second time when they chose to drop the Mac model or line that we purchased. What upgrade path do they offer to Mac Plus owners or have they already been stranded. With the expectation of the IIcx to be their "cash cow" of the 90's where will that leave SE owners in a few years? or will that become a dead machine as the Mac II line progresses? Regarding your question #3.. If I wanted to play Etch a Sketch with a mouse, I would either use an Etch a Sketch program, or borrow my kids Etch a Sketch.. When I am at a keyboard, the productivity is at it's highest when my fingers are on the keys, not going back and forth to the mouse. Keyboard control keeps fingers on the keyboard. That's why programs like DB MASTER PROFESSIONAL are selling to GS owners as well as IIe owners, high productivity time, with no waste playing mouseketeer. -- Internet -- bsherm%umbio@umigw.miami.edu UUCP -- {uunet!gould}!umbio!bsherm Miami's Big Apple 305-948-8000 300/1200 baud 24 hours 8 years online

>where will that leave SE owners in a few years? or will that become a >dead machine as the Mac II line progresses? Apple has already announced an upgrade for the SE to the SE-030 (due this Spring - still vaporware as far as I know - the price quoted in InfoWorld was $1,000 <or maybe between $1,000 and $1,500 I haven't the file I saved the info in at home>). The Direct bus in the SE-030 is faster than NuBus (but doesn't offer the multichannel capability, which isn't so important in a one slot system) AND there is some notion (not really articulated by anyone in authority at Apple in anything I've read) that the SE line is targeted at the "personal" single user (running mostly one task at a time) while the Mac II line is targeted at the server/multiuser/multiple task/numerical- graphic intensive workstation market. Apple appears strategically committed to the SE and Mac II as distinct but compatible products for at least the next 3-5 years. Would that plans for the II line were so clear... /s Murph <Sewall%UConnVM.BITNET@CornellC.CIT.Cornell.Edu> aka <psuvax1!uconnvm.bitnet!sewall> I bought the latest computer; it came fully loaded. because of price and speed. the WORST pricing (at least here in germany) is for the 80MB scsi disk which sells for 6400DM, about $3000. for this i can buy a 630MB (read my lips, son: SIX HUNDRED) scsi disc, 15ms, and have 300DM left for the power supply that ( i think ) comes with the apple disk. i just recently bought a 84mb scsi drive (3 1/2, 12ms) drive for 1800DM.
