[comp.sys.apple] Datalink 2400 problem

SASQUATCH@ALBION.BITNET ("Kevin O. Lepard 629-5511 x6668", 517) (04/13/89)

I am using a Datalink 2400 in slot 2 of an Apple //GS w/ 1.25M Ram, w/ 192K
reserved for use as a ROM disk by an RamKeeper, 2 Apple 3.5" disk drives, 1
Apple 5.25" disk drive, 1 Disk ][, a 40 Meg Sider D4a in slot 7, and a
Fingerprint+ in slot 1.

After using the modem for a period of time ranging from 5 to 60 minutes,
the modem will often (but not, unfortunately, always) "hang" That is, it
will produce one continuous tone and stop accepting commands, including the
+++ signal. At this point, the only way to get the modem to hang up is to
press reset.

Warm booting will not fix the problem; as soon as you tell the modem to
dial, it picks up the phone line and then produces the continuous tone,
again hanging up. A faked cold boot (by first starting the self test, then
rebooting, like you can do to reset the control panel) doesn't help either.

The only thing that seems to work is to shut the computer off for 5 or more
minutes, then start again. My only guess is that it is a heat problem.
However, the computer is ventilated by a MDIdeas fan, and the air in my
work area is further circulated by a separate fan.

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong? I'd really like to fix this
myself, because I don't want to have to send it to AE and then wait around
a couple of weeks or longer to get it back. Can anyone suggest what may be
causing the problem? Or, if you think it's a heat problem, what can I do
about that? (I don't have any other problems with other cards or
peripherals, though.)

Thanks in advance.
