And here's (hopefully) another answer...

Whenever you want to do something to a directory, you _must_ place a checkmark
beside it using the <spacebar>.  If you press <return> while a directory is
highlighted, that directory will be OPENED, as per the button on the right-hand
side of the file dialog.

If you only have 1 file to delete, and that file happens to be a subdirectory,
then press OPEN-APPLE-G after checking off the file...
