Yes, by coincidence, I saw it last night. I went in with mixed expectations as I'd heard good reviews and tepid reviews. *I haven't laughed so hard at a movie since "Holy Grail".* Part of it was the improptuness (our main selection was sold out) but it is also a very honest film. It knows what it is, namely a summer teenage exploitation film, and it's loaded with cliches; but the characterizations, the pacing and the acting are all first rate. The plot devices even get you past the black-and-white situations without unsuspending your disbelief. Even Gene and Rodger liked it. However, I think the main reason for the films acceptance, at least here in the Bay Area, is that it strikes awfully close to home. Although my wife claims to have rescued me from terminal nerdishness (I haven't worn my calcu- lator on my belt in years and I traded in my black plastic frames for some aviator style in '75) there's plenty of nerdulosity bubbling just below the surface. One of the protaganists (sp?) in the story even carries a six inch scale in his "nerd pack" (pencil pocket), just as I do. By all means go see it. Just don't expect "Sophie's Choice".
