i am having trouble using ascii 2 express, i wonder if it could be coused by the fact that my modem has no phone. I just can't seem to make a connection to anywhere with it(i don't get the red connection light to light up). *scott brenner

You DO need a phone line (not a phone) to use a modem (even if it's just a phone wire connected to another modem :-) It's been a LONG time since I looked at the AE Pro setup, but there is a (documented) parameter that "sets" AE Pro to "carrier detected" (I can't recall if it's named CONNECT or CARRIER or something of that nature). Anyway, it will allow you to enter terminal mode and "dial" from the keyboard. It's in there among all those menus (somewhere). Probably whichever one sets parity, buad rate and like that. Regarding accessing the modem directly through AE Pro, you want to set an option in the INSTALL menus. It should be one of the last menus. The option is 'PERMANENT CARRIER' or some such. When you want to use the terminal features, just use the terminal escape sequence.
