Here's further news... Posted on 30 Apr 1989 at 14:41:36 by BrownVM Mailer (103837) Serious problem at BITNIC Date: Sun, 30 Apr 89 14:22:42 EDT Reply-To: "Michael R. Gettes" <GETTES@PUCC> From: "Michael R. Gettes" <GETTES@PUCC> This past weekend there existed a serious problem at the BITNIC. Due to certain network and LISTSERV related problems the NIC had to be taken down from the network in order to allow it to process a heavy backlog of listserv distributions. In allowing LISTSERV to process what it had to, it generated over 24,000 files. These files have all been backed off to tape because there is no possible way the BITNIC could put these files back onto the network, it would simply *never* catch up. Princeton University has created a method by which we may place these files back onto the network at a relatively reasonable rate, about 1000/hour. The actual rate of placing these files back onto the network will probably be slower so as not to completely overwhelm other areas of the network. So, there will be a delay of a couple of days of anything that was submitted to, or had to pass through, the BITNIC as of last wednesday, since the backlog started. I would like to thank Princeton University's management for allowing assistance to the BITNIC to resolve this situation as well as Randi Robinson (RLRCU@CUNYVM), Arty Ecock and Ricky Hernandez (RICKY@BITNIC) for all of the exhaustive assistance provided in trying to relieve this situation. Steps are being taken at this time to try and alleviate the problem for the short and long term. Discussion of the problem should be confined to the NODMGT-L list. I will keep you posted as to any further problems and progress of the return of these 24,000 files. Michael R. Gettes, Princeton University
